Do Your Best & Let God Do the Rest
by brian j plachta on June 29th, 2016

There’s often an inner tension within us; a negative, free-floating anxiety that worries about so many things.
I worry about my work: am I able to get everything done for my clients in a timely fashion?  Are my children safe, happy, and loving? Do they believe in God?  Do they hear his voice, and let it guide them?
I worry about our country and the world.  Are my family and I safe? Free? When will the division and bitterness end?
How am I called to make the world a better place?  Am I doing what I’ve been created to do, created to be, to help pour more love into the world?
Some say we need to simply give these droning worries over to God.  Hand them over piece by piece like putting breadsticks in a basket and giving the basket to God so he can take care of them.  Others say we need to just place them at the feet of the cross and leave them there.
I try to do that, but as soon as I hand over my worries to God, something inside of me takes them back.  Not so much because I want to, but because even when I give my worries over to God, they’re still there.  Nagging me.  Bugging me. Reminding me I live in an often-chaotic planet.
Maybe another way of dealing with worry might be to hold these worries with God, instead of giving them to him.  When I hold my worries with God, I take responsibility to do my part and trust that God will do his.
When my children were young we had a favorite saying:
Do your best and leave the rest to God.
My parents handed down that piece of age-old wisdom to me and it makes good sense I think.  It suggests that God and us are co-partners, co-creators.  God trusts us to do our part to make things right, and we learn to trust God to do his part.
So, when I worry, perhaps it’s really an invitation to lean into God a little more, take a deep breath, relax, and know from past evidence that God’s a pretty reliable partner.  He created the sun and the moon and the stars and fills our lungs with new breath every few seconds, so I guess we can trust him to work with us and through us to get whatever job that needs doing done.
When I take responsibility for my part of creating a better world and give the rest of the work to God, the worry within me seems to dissipate.   Slowly, I begin to rest in God even in the midst of a chaotic day.  I connect my heart, mind, and soul to God and the two of us then start tackling what needs to be done together, leaving the rest of the work to our co-partner.
And after our work is done, we can rest in God and God can rest in us, knowing each of us did our best.
