Unconditional Love---The Gift that Keeps on Giving
by brian j plachta on August 31st, 2016

Unconditional love sets us free. It’s what Jesus did when he turned his eyes toward heaven and said, father forgive them, before he died.  It’s what he meant when asked how many times must I forgive my brother and responded, seven times seventy.

Unconditional love is the pathway to peace—both inner peace and peace in our relationships.

Unconditional love does not keep score.  It does not demand an apology (Jesus never got one from those who killed him).  It doesn’t get caught up in language.

Unconditional love does not try to change others. It accepts them for who they are, where they are.  It lets go of expectations of others and accepts them and life on life’s terms.

Unconditional love knows people don’t change when they’re threatened and blamed and yelled at.  They only become more defensive and angry, like a dog backed into a corner.  Instead, people change when we change, when we learn to love ourselves first, and then share that love and forgiveness with others.

It’s said that when we have expectations of others we’re setting ourselves up for disappointment because people will most often not meet the expectations we set for them.  Instead, when we let go of our expectations of others, and accept life on life’s terms we find deeper happiness. We let go of our expectations and live unconditional love for each other and ourselves.  We know we are safe, and so we work on ourselves, taking our hands off trying to change others.

Learning to love unconditionally sounds easy or even trite but is one of the biggest challenges we will face in our lives.  It’s where the rubber hits the road and we discover how to walk the talk.

Our false self, our ego, wants to get even.  It falls prey to the resentments that rise up in us when we’re hurt by another.

Our false self likes to point its finger at others and blame them. It projects its problems outward instead of seeing each experience as an opportunity for inner growth and wisdom.

Our real self, our True Self, is able to see life’s experiences with deeper clarity and trusting wisdom. It turns inward when life stings and asks God’s Spirit to show us what virtue he is leading us toward.  It lets life unfold, gracefully.

Our True Self understands the struggle. It’s patient and kind with our self and others.  It knows love wins and trusts it.

Our True Self walks away from the noise in our head and around us so we can sit alone in the Quiet and ask God to show us the way to live a life of love in each moment, in each relationship. Our True Self hears the still small whisper of the Holy Spirit and follows its guidance.

There are in the end three things that last: faith, hope and love.  And the greatest of these, the one that keeps on giving peace and happiness, is unconditional love.

it suffers me to see & feel the junk we hang onto because we feel there has been no resolution - I feel the huge amount of baggage held onto because we feel we have been wronged & have not forgiven first ourselves for being close minded - a simple few words makes all the difference - practice 'open your heART'
